Today, teachers from around NC are beginning to return to their schools, their classrooms, and their friends, some of them for the first time, some of them for the last time. It's fitting to me that today is also a blue moon, the third full moon in a season, and a way to send out the old and bring in the new.
Marine CSI is doing just that in a number of ways. First and foremost, the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is requiring all schools to fully implement the new 2023 approved state standards for science education. This is great news for Marine CSI, because the standards ask students to model science concepts and topics. Marine CSI's Watershed Walkabout program is all about using modeling techniques for its hands-on learning experiences! So before any changes are made, the original program works hand-in-hand with the new standards.
I didn't stop there, though. It was a great time to change out some of the activities that either were not requested enough or were not meeting the needs of the students. So I've replaced some of the old activities with new ones and they will get rolled out this school year with the new standards.
Thirdly, I am continuing Marine CSI's growth up the Cape Fear River and adding Duplin and Bladen Counties to the list! I'm excited to announce that the 2024-25 school year I will now recruit to these two additional counties with the new activity list. Because of the nature of the business and the location of my home office in Wilmington, these counties will be asked to pay an additional travel fee for the program, but I know they'll get the best quality activities no matter the charge.
I am also switching to the central location for all upcoming teacher workshops this fall. We will meet at Kenneth Batts Family Park in Surf City in September, October, and November. Instead of two or three dates and times, I am doing one a month, to give me more time to focus on rolling out school programs, and two of the three will feature the Coastal Curriculum I designed last year.
It's going to be a great new school year, riding on the shirttails of the change of the seasons, the blue moon, and new standards for science education. I have full confidence that together we can make this year the best for our students and continue to grow in leaps and bounds with regards to our commitment to excellence in how and what we teach.
