It's fall, y'all! Well, it doesn't feel like it yet, but it will be here soon enough. The sun is still a bit too warm, the kids are still wearing shorts to school, and the leaves haven't yet begun to change their colors, but this is the fall season. That means the focus shifts to school-wide programs.
The 2024-25 school year comes with lots of changes, not the least of which is the implementation of the new NC 2023 State Science Standards. This is advantageous to me because the standards request students to now model science topics and themes. All Marine CSI does is modeling with its hands-on experiential learning techniques! This means I can provide not only students with continued programming, but I can provide teachers with added incentive to host me in their classrooms.
Along with these changes, I've gone ahead and moved around some activities that would work better with other grades' standards, gotten rid of a few older activities, and added some new ones to replace them. These changes are all reflected on the two website pages: Watershed Walkabout: Cape Fear and Watershed Walkabout: White Oak.
Still, there one more change that is applied to our Watershed Walkabout: Cape Fear program, and that is the addition of TWO new counties! This year, I'll be recruiting to both Duplin and Bladen County Schools, since they both lie within the Cape Fear River Basin. Teachers from both districts have been contacted and I can't wait to spread the love of marine science education to them!
This fall, we're also changing things a bit with our workshop offerings. All summer, we had our general marine science workshops available to all K-12 educators, formal and informal. There were three per month at various locations. In September and November, we'll be going back to our Coastal Curriculum workshops, open to all K-8 educators. In October, we still have one more Marine Science workshop available. All three will be offered once per month and at our single location in Surf City, a beautiful park on the marsh. Registration and payment can be found on this site: Teacher Workshops.
